Here's the plot twist in most stalled book launches: the problem the author thinks is the problem usually isn't the problem.

One author we worked with was convinced his cover was killing sales. Fair suspicion. Covers get blamed for everything, like the dog in a house with toddlers. But the cover was fine. His Amazon categories were the issue. He'd picked categories no reader would ever browse for hisbook. With a quick fix, he was back on track. That's the pattern.

Below are the mistakes we see most, and what to do instead**.**

**Mistake #1: Fixing the symptom instead of the root cause**

Low sales are a symptom. The cause lives in one of three buckets: writing, publishing, or marketing. Swapping covers when your categories are wrong is like repainting a car with no engine. Very shiny. Still parked.

**Do instead:** Diagnose before you spend. Check reviews (writing), check covers, categories, and your sales page (publishing), then check traffic (marketing).

**Mistake #2: Treating launch day as the finish line**

Many authors pour everything into launch week, then go quiet. Readers notice. So do algorithms.

**Do instead:** Plan for the long game. A book is marketed for years, not days.

**Mistake #3: A cover that doesn't match the genre**

Readers judge books by their covers. That's not cynicism; it's speed. A thriller dressed like a cozy romance confuses the exact people you want to attract.

**Do instead:** Put your cover next to the top 20 in your category. It should look like it belongs there, and still stand out.

**Mistake #4: A sales page that does half the job**

No A+ content. A blurb that summarizes the plot instead of selling the experience. A business book description that never says who it's for.

**Do instead:** Treat your Amazon page like your best salesperson. It works 24/7 and never asks for a raise.

**Mistake #5: Chasing visibility instead of proximity**

Visibility gets you seen. Proximity gets you chosen. Readers buy from authors they feel they know, the way they'd trust a friend's recommendation over a billboard.

**Do instead:** Build closeness on purpose. A regular newsletter, real thoughts in your posts, a short video where readers hear your voice, a reply that makes someone feel seen.

**Mistake #6: Being everywhere (and exhausted)**

Five platforms, posted on inconsistently, beats nobody. Except you. It beats you.

**Do instead:** Pick one or two platforms. Show up consistently. Repeat what works. Refine instead of restarting.

**Mistake #7: Counting the wrong things**

Views and follower counts feel good. They rarely sell books.

**Do instead:** Watch what signals real interest: replies, email sign-ups, repeat engagement, reviews, and sales.

**Mistake #8: Making readers hunt**

Interest is emotional and fast. If a reader has to click five times to find your buy link, they're gone, probably to watch a dog video.

**Do instead:** Say exactly what you're selling. Make the next step obvious. Fewer clicks, every time.

**Mistake #9: Thinking like a hobbyist**

This one's quiet but costly. Authors who see themselves as "just writing a little book" market like it. Authors who see themselves as Authorpreneurs make commitments, keep them, and build confidence along the way.

**Do instead:** Decide what your book is for (income, authority, legacy) and market it like it matters. Because it does.

**The bottom line**

Most author marketing mistakes aren't about effort. They're about aim. Find the real problem, fix that first, and stay close to your readers long enough for them to choose you.
